History of Shapewear
Shapewear has long been a well-kept secret among women, serving as a valuable addition to any wardrobe. Whether for everyday wear or high-profile events, shapewear has been embraced by many, including celebrities. However, its origins date back to ancient times when it took on much different—and often far less comfortable—forms.
The girdle is believed to be the earliest type of shapewear, originally designed as a knitted, belt-like garment. In ancient times, girdles were thought to possess supernatural powers, with the Babylonian goddess Ishtar reportedly wearing one for fertility. Beyond their mystical associations, girdles were used to shape, strengthen, and refine the body. They were considered symbols of modesty and respectability, often seen as empowering for men and protective for women.
For centuries, shaping garments were regarded as essential for achieving an ideal silhouette. From the 1920s to the 1960s, girdles were a staple in women’s fashion, gradually evolving into the modern shapewear and slimming apparel we know today.
Corsets have an extensive history and remain a part of fashion even now. Many associate the corset with Catherine de’ Medici, the wife of King Henry II of France, who reportedly banned thick waists at court in the 1550s. However, evidence suggests that corset-like garments date back even further, possibly to Ancient Crete. By the 16th century, corsets were made using silk and linen, with boning initially crafted from actual bone. Whalebone later became the preferred material for the stays and busk, and eventually, steel stays were introduced. The wealthiest wearers even adorned their corsets with ribbon lacing at the neck, a luxury reserved for the elite.
